Anaesthesia and your Pet

Pre-anaesthetic Instructions:

Operations are due to be paid on collection of your pet

Here at The Athy Veterinary Hospital we pride ourselves on providing your pet with the best care available and anaesthesia is no exception. We improve anaesthetic safety by :

Using modern anaesthetic machines and the safest available intravenous and gas anaesthesia

Having highly trained nursing staff dedicated to anaesthesia and theatre work

Using pre-anaesthetic sedatives to reduce the amounts of anaesthetic required

Aiding recovery by the use of pain killing and antibiotic injections

Pre-anaesthetic Blood Tests:

We cannot eliminate the possibility of pre-existing medical conditions complicating or compromising your pet’s health and therefore, just as in human medicine, we offer a pre-anaesthetic blood check. We highly recommend a pre-anaesthetic blood test to detect any problems, which may not be evident on physical examination, but which might cause us to adjust the dose or type of anaesthetic used, or even delay surgery until after treatment and allow us to advise you on the best treatment for the future welfare of your pet. The proper functioning of your pet’s liver and kidneys is especially important, as these organs detoxify and eliminate sedatives and anaesthetics. This is available to all our patients but if your cat or dog is over the age of seven, or is suffering from a long-term illness, then this test is particularly important.

In order to make them as available as possible to our patients these tests are offered at a reduced price. Please let us know you if would like us to complete these tests. Should you have any further queries or concerns please do not hesitate to ask to speak with the vet or veterinary nurse.
